The Power Of Pilates
Pilates teaches breathing control with movement, body mechanics, balance, co-ordination and positioning of the body. Pilates has spread from a single studio in New York frequented by professional dancers, to a technique with world-wide appeal, practiced by people of all ages and backgrounds.
Learn how to breathe laterally, while the abdominal muscles are free to effectively contract, allowing for more efficient movement in exercise while stabilising and supporting the spine.
Become more physically self aware and recognise your habits and body mechanics. If you watch how you move your exercise routine will improve.
BalanceGreater muscle balance and symmetry is achieved when you learn to use the body correctly. Because of the systematic approach to the exercises, Pilates teaches your body to work more balanced.
Coordination is a complex skill and requires some good balance alongside strength and agility. Coordination allows for smooth and efficient movement patterns to complete a task.
There are Pilates movements that help increase flexibility of the back, front-body, side-body, hamstrings and hips, enabling your body to move more freely.
At the heart of Pilates, is the development of core stabilisers. This not only includes focus on the abdominal “core” but the also the scapular and hip stabilisers.

I thought I would give you a little insight into something profound (to me at least) that happened. Please bear in mind that this is coming from someone who, as I have told you before, has lived most of her life with fairly constant back pain. In the past I used to see a physio roughly every 2-3 months just to try and get some sort of relief. Every now and again I would also see a Chiro when my physio was at her wits end not knowing how else to help me. Thankfully, all of that is in the past and is no longer my present.
Because of the amount of running I have been doing recently, I decided to set up an appointment with my chiro, just to check that everything was ok and as a form of prevention rather than cure. After completing the assessment and giving me some treatment yesterday, he informed me that my back, neck and body in general feels great and that everything is absolutely fine. He was very impressed with the difference in me in comparison to notes that he had from the last time he saw me (quite some time ago). It was completely different information to what I have become accustomed to hearing throughout the years AND I didn’t even have to book a follow up appointment.
I left feeling pretty stoked, but more importantly super grateful.
Pilates has truly altered my life in a big way and I just wanted to thank you.
Grateful for you, Jo and grateful for Pilates.
My balance which has always been shocking has improved so much even my hubby is impressed, my core is so much stronger and my tone has improved a lot. On top of this I get so much enjoyment from each class – although Jo works us to the ultimate we can bear, we also laugh a lot. I plan my whole week around my Pilates classes as that is MY thing which I get to enjoy.
Jo’s compassion, infinite patience and sense of humor make each class a treat not to be missed.

My name is Mary da Costa. I started Pilates about 9 years ago. At that time I was having problems with my hip and my sciatic nerve and had difficulty walking. I began individual lessons twice a week. Jo-Anne worked slowly with me strengthening my core. I am now able to walk without pain, do my own house work and feel 10 years younger. I have now progressed to a trio class once a week and individual class once a week where we do more challenging exercises. My advice to the younger members of my family is to start now while you are young.

After recovering from two major heart surgeries and loosing 40 Kg I had to find a way to start regaining my strength, mobility and energy. I was unable to do anything that involved too much cardio and my physiotherapist recommended Naturally Pilates Studio. Jo-Anne has been the most encouraging, sweet and professional instructor. She is so structured, and her routines that run seamlessly from one exercise to the next. Her classes are awesome. It is obvious that she puts in a lot of preparation to keep the classes interesting and progressively difficult. She targets all the various muscle groups and you are never bored. Read more…

My name is Heather and I’m 34 years old. I started with Naturally Pilates in 2007. I struggled with extreme lower back pain which would run down my legs, a friend suggested Pilates. I found Naturally Pilates and decided to give it a try.
Jo assessed me and asked where I was having problems, I never looked back. After 2 weeks I was so much better, Jo has also helped me with a knee injury and after a twin pregnancy , none of my ailments have come back.
Jo is professional and knows exactly how to treat the problems that arise.
I started Pilates about two years ago, in order to get better core strength for my cycling and I must say what a difference it has made. Not just in my stability on the bike but also in my power delivery in my pedal stroke as well as in my day to day strength and energy in both work and play.
